Where are we now?

View Where are we now? in a larger map Jo, Annie, Miles and I are living in Northport, Alabama and working at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. We've been glad to be in one place for a bit after what appeared to be semi-permanently traveling (in actuality for a period of 2.5 years). We started this blog to catalogue some of the adventures when Jo and I were sequentially conducting our dissertation research in India and Brazil. While we've fallen off the blogging bandwagon somewhat during recent trips to Brazil, we're trying to pick it up again now that we're back in India!

Fun times with Friends and Families

In the last few days we've entered into a new phase of our lives in terms of social relationships (yes, this is the cultural anthropologist talking): fun get-togethers with friends, and friends who have children. We met two new friends A. and B. and their darling 5 month old daughter S. this last week at a Fulbright function. A. is an ethnomusicologist, focusing on sitar, and just starting his Fulbright fellowship here in India. We had a lovely dinner with them and our mutual friends A. and E. last night. (We've decided  not to mention people by name anymore on the blog, without their signed prior consent of several forms absolving us of indemnity, so it's guess the initial time for everyone). Forms aside, it was a night of pass-the-baby.

This morning we went to a nearby neighbors house for brunch. R. works with E., and interestingly enough, R. did a stint at Emory in public health. Anyways, their daughter is just precious and was fascinated with Annie. She and Jo had fun playing an alphabet computer game, and then we all had a great time playing in the neighborhood park.

Clearly, this little two year old just stole my heart, she is so cute, so sweet, and so affectionate, running over and giving us hugs and kisses.

It's just funny to me, as we now our not only not capable of holding a conversation without succumbing into baby gibberish, but unable to hold a conversation for too long that doesn't return to the subject of babies. Oh well, perhaps more interesting than stuffy academic conversations!

Fun times with Friends and Families Indeed!

Surprise!!!!

Many readers of this blog might know that yesterday (October 15th) was Jo's 30th birthday!!! What most will not know, however, is that Grandma Gail and I threw her a surprise party!!! What many do not know about me is that I am horrible at keeping surprises. I'm talking awful, the pits, the worst. For example, I remember a previous birthday of Jo's where I had bought her a dress I knew she wanted about a week before her birthday, I drove home and was so excited I couldn't keep it hidden in my backpack, I showed it to her as soon as I walked in the door, hopping around with glee. All of which is to say that somehow, due to Gail's presence and co-conspiratorial assistance, I was able to plan this bash for Jo and it was actually a surprise!

To make her think I hadn't forgotten, Gail and I made a special breakfast of a fruit platter and chocolate chip pancakes.

With the ruse carried out and the curiosity deflected, it was time for the real event!

Some of you might know that I have a history of hidden video-camera usage; I recorded me proposing to Jo by placing a camera inside a potted plant. Granted I mostly got below our knees but it was the thought that counts, right? Well, I think the following video came out much better, using the computer's webcam and a screen capture program.

Banjo and balloons, a pair that was always meant to go together

Annie in her fancy dress for the first time, which will probably last another week!

Sibghat and Annie

Emily--who is also doing diabetes research in Delhi--got a chance to meet some of our other Delhi's friends

Adam, who is Emily's husband, just arrived in Delhi a few days ago and was eager to learn about the upcoming Indian holiday of Diwali

Me relieved that the time of trying to keep the surprise a secret was over.

Our friendly neighbors had fun reconnecting

Jo had made it clear she wanted fruit for her birthday, so I ordered a fruit bouquet! Getting it was quite an ordeal, but when it arrived, Jo was amazed and I think all would agree it was love at first sight.

Random moments and photos

Well, for those of you who are starting to have conniptions at not having had an "Annie update" in the last few days, sit yourself down for a moment. Here are some random moments and photos from our last few days of life with Annie....

Our friends have just been amazing, forming a pit crew that caters to our every need: Fresh baked cookie (check); espresso (check); amazing home-cooked meal (check)....baby (CHECK!)

Emilia and Annie multitasking (well, at least Emilia)

We're going to have to pull Annie away from Sarah...

Getting up early and letting Jo sleep in: Annie, laptop, espresso=the trifecta

We knew this one would take to camping early, after she's had her coffee, it's down for a nap in the tent made with Grandma Gail's baby quilt

Shubra came by for a really nice visit

Annie's not so sure about bath time...

But the upshot about bath time is there are soooo many cute clothes to dress her in!

Annie's first Indian top, which doubles as a dress, as it's for a 1 year old (THANKS BETH for thinking ahead!)

We've also been occupying all of our oodles of free time by interpreting Annie's faces...

Perturbed

I need my beauty rest...yes, all 22 hours of it, even if it comes in punctuated bits

Dinosaur face (she also makes dinosaur sounds; don't ask us how we know...we just do

Baby Frog

Baby frog who turns into a cute duckling

oh, and Jo is totally prepared now for a monsoon flood as she has her new life jacket (in red). Actually it's a feeding pillow, but I think it will work when the end of days arrives...
